Kodiak Cakes

What are Kodiak Cakes: Your Protein Breakfast Alternative

As an American, it’s part of my official duty to have a breakfast feast that would have our European counterparts disgusted. All joking aside, a small croissant just doesn’t cut it for me when I work a 12 hour day. Eggs of some sort are my go-to, I like them because they leave me feeling full and give me that essential protein I look for throughout my day. I normally try to stay away from waffles and pancakes, so when I discovered Kodiak Cakes: Flapjack and Waffle Mix walking down an aisle at Sam’s Club, the box truly piqued my interest.

What are Kodiak Cakes?

Kodiak Cakes are a company that offers whole-grain flour mixes that combine isolate and whey protein in their ingredient list to give you the nutritional component that is often left out in normal waffle and pancake mixes. Kodiak Cakes is growing rapidly and their product line is expanding into new products such as muffin mixes, baking mixes, nutrition bars, snacks, and power cups!

Kodiak Cakes Nutritional Information

Displayed on Kodiak’s Waffle and Flapjack box it proudly reads 14 grams of protein per serving. For comparison, an egg has 6 grams.

The instructions also have an option to increase your protein quantities by substituting milk for water and adding an egg. This bumped up the protein intake to 20 grams which is similar to an average workout shake.

Seeking a change from my egg-filled routine, I bought a box and was excited to try.

Waffle Recipe

I went for the Kodiak Cakes waffle recipe first. The instructions are as simple as they come. Combine the powder, water, tablespoon of oil, and then mix. In under a minute you have your batter ready to go before the waffle iron is even warmed up.

As mentioned above, I added milk and egg to the recipe in an effort to boost my protein intake.

The results were great-looking waffles that tasted “good”, not great. I won’t lie to you, if you are used to delicious homemade Belgian waffles, these may be a letdown for you. The waffles came out a little dry, but a small amount of butter and syrup was able to fix that (lol healthy right).

Buttermilk Recipe

The following day I tried the Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Flapjack recipe. Because I had slightly more control over how done I wanted the pancake on the stove compared to the waffle iron timer, the pancakes came out much moister.

Once again, compared to home-made buttermilk pancakes, they were definitely not as delicious. However, I enjoyed them enough to include them into my breakfast routine which says a lot.

If you are willing to sacrifice a small amount of taste for a healthier, protein-packed alternative, then Kodiak Cake products should be on your list to try.

One cool thing about the Kodiak Cakes Website is that they offer recipes using their mixes for free. With such a wide variety of meals to make using their mixes, it shows how versatile the product is. A simple Google search indicates that Banana muffins are one of their top searched recipes.
